This cel is from one of my favorite anime movies, Millennium Actress, which was written and directed by Satoshi Kon. The scene shows the young actress Chiyoko Fujiwara playing a ninja in a film along with older actress Eiko Shimao. More is actually happening in this scene, however, as Kon’s movie creates a melange of movie and real life, and of past and present.
Millennium Actress was released in 2001. Madhouse was in charge of the film production. Takeshi Honda was both the character designer and assistant director, but some of the characters were created by Kon, who also designed all of the movie posters of Chiyoko within the film.
