The Boys: Saiyuki Reload

Saiyuki Reload Gunlock:

The hugely popular Saiyuki stories by Mangaka Kazuya Minekura have been adapted into numerous anime releases. The earliest of the series, Gensomaden Saiyuki, was one of the first to use computers instead of cels. I have art from Gensomaden, Reload, and Gunlock. All were made by Studio Pierrot.

When a collector buys more recent authentic Japanese anime art today, they buy a collection of paper. It can include a rough layout, partial and full sketches, and the Douga or final line drawing, and sometimes a painted background that is scanned into a computer for coloring and animating. Occasionally a timing sheet is included as well.

The sketch set here is from a scene in Saiyuki Reload. It includes all of our heroes on their Journey to the West. From left are Goijo, Goku, Sanzo, and Hakkai who holds Hakuryu who is sometimes a little dragon and sometimes a jeep.

The second sketch shows a rough of additional head positions of the characters to be used in the scene, plus wing flapping by Hakuru.

Here is a screenshot to see how the finished work appears in the anime.
