Masami Obari directed the 2000 mecha anime series, PlatinumHugen Ordian, which was his second TV series after Virus Buster Serge. The story centers around 18-year-old Yuu Kananase who is found to have an innate talent for mecha and is recruited by the International Military Organization to potentially become a pilot for their RimHugens and eventually become part of the emergency military force.
This series is underappreciated outside Japan mostly due to poor copies and worse translations. While I haven’t watched it in a long time, (and when I did it was a Chinese pirated copy), I found a fan version that is easier to follow.
The two cels of Yuu posted here are both close-ups of the character. The face shot is particularly strong. The purchase of the full-face cel was the deciding factor in collecting more art from the series. The art style of the series is very distinctive with a certain rawness that I find very appealing.
